When you think of strong branding strategies, grocery stores are probably not the first type of company that comes to mind. However, Trader Joe’s is a trailblazer in customer satisfaction and creating a unique in-store shopping experience compared to its competitors.

So, what exactly is Trader Joe’s doing right that lures in new customers and keeps loyal customers coming back? Below are three ways the company remains successful year after year.

Trader Joe’s keeps it simple and laid-back
At other grocery stores around the country, you can typically see what sales are being offered before you even step foot into the store, along with signage encouraging you to sign up for the company’s loyalty card to save even more money. You might even see a commercial advertising the deals at your local store that week. Trader Joe’s breaks away from this mold by having no sales, coupons or loyalty program, as well as spending no money on advertising. This approach takes the pressure off the customer to find the best deal possible, because at Trader Joe’s you’re already getting the lowest price.

Trader Joe’s makes the shopping experience relaxing and fun by offering free samples to customers, and stickers and free coloring sheets to kids. Every store also has artwork that is unique to the neighborhood it’s located in; customers can even purchase reusable tote bags that are exclusive to the store’s respective neighborhood. All of this creates a more personal feel that wouldn’t typically be felt at a traditional grocery store.

Human connection is a key component of the Trader Joe’s shopping experience, so the company hires friendly employees who are encouraged to go above and beyond for customers to ensure they have a great experience while in the store. Many grocery stores don’t have employees stocking the shelves during peak store hours, but Trader Joe’s ignores the standard practice to create more face-to-face interactions between employees and customers. A personalized shopping experience goes a long way to keep returning customers satisfied and new customers coming back.

It promises great quality products at low prices
Besides exceptional customer service and a laid-back ambience, Trader Joe’s also offers great quality products at exceptionally low prices compared to other grocery stores. Since the company cuts out the middleman by selling private label items, it can sell products that are manufactured in the same manner as brand name products for a fraction of the cost. While the prices are low, the quality definitely isn’t. Trader Joe’s does stock items that can be found at any grocery store, but it also carries some eclectic and unique offerings for those wanting to try something new.

Though Trader Joe’s goes against the industry standard when it comes to food retail, it has figured out a way to stand out among competitors by crafting a unique shopping experience that has become synonymous with the brand, making it a leader in customer loyalty.
