“So no one told you life was gonna be this way…” Did you just clap in your head after reading that? If not, those are the lyrics to the theme song for the hit 90s sitcom “Friends”. Fifteen years after the last episode aired, HBO bought the rights to “Friends” for $425 million, according to Fox Business. That hefty price tag illuminates the value the show still holds after nearly two decades. After the purchase, HBO announced “Friends: The Reunion,” a 105-minute unscripted special of the cast reminiscing together on the old sets. Ultimately, the reunion brought in nearly 53 million viewers, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
This special offered a new angle on a deeply loved show and gave HBO an opportunity to continue to capitalize on the previous success of “Friends”. The original show had 235 episodes with so much content to be explored, but, after 15 years, there are only so many ways to make the show relevant. The reunion special brought the beloved show back into the spotlight.
TV and movie reunion specials can be a powerful PR strategy because they rely on an already established audience. Unlike new shows, which must build viewership from scratch, reunion specials benefitfrom loyal fan bases and strong emotional connections. This engagement is fueled by nostalgia, as viewers reconnect with the characters and stories that shaped their earlier experiences.

The “Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special” was announced on February 17, 2026. The special looks back on the hit 2000s show where Miley Cyrus lives a double life: she’s a regular high schooler by day and a blonde wig-wearing pop star by night. According to Disney+ the special will include an interview with Alex Cooper, host of podcast “Call Her Daddy,” exclusive performances, as well as never-before-seen, behind-the-scenes footage. Revisiting this iconic series allows Cyrus to reflect on the show from a more mature perspective, two decades later. The reunion is an opportunity for both Disney and Cyrus to tap back into that older audience and reel them in. Cyrus just released a new album in 2025 so the special can her gain more media attention, which then leads to indirect publicity for herself and the album.
The special significantly boosted Disney’s viewership. Views of the original show increased by nearly 1000%, and the anniversary special drew over 6.3 million viewers according to Tribune. The early 2000s show has not seen this level of buzz in years. This renewed attention places the show back in the spotlight and broadens its appeal across generations. It’s a strategic way to position a 20-year-old show alongside new releases.
Another successful special that skyrocketed views was the “Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special”. The special was three hours with celebrity guests such as Adam Sandler, Jimmy Fallon, Will Ferrell, and Meryl Streep. It ended up being “NBC’s most-watched prime-time entertainment telecast in five years, reaching nearly 15 million viewers” according to AP News.
I know I’m still patiently waiting for a “Good Luck Charlie” or “Wizards of Waverly Place” reunion special. I’d love to see some of my favorite Disney Channel and Nickelodeon classics back in the spotlight.
