Behind the Billboard

Taylor Swift. Sabrina Carpenter. Beyoncé. Kendrick Lamar. These are some of the most influential music artists hitting the Billboard charts today. Let’s face it, the way these artists market their music is infectious. Behind every viral sensation is a PR team waiting in the wings, producing marketing magic. Album promotion builds excitement for what’s ahead–think merch drops, social media teasers, tour announcements and more.

Taylor Swift, a global pop-star, recently released her new album “The Life of a Showgirl”. Album promotion included limited-edition physical copies of vinyls and CDs, lots of social media posts and even an album announcement on the “New Heights” podcast hosted by Travis and Jason Kelce. It totally paid off, with the album debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and bringing in over 4 million units in its first week. Clever promotion clearly gets results. This showgirl really knows how to steal the spotlight!

Taylor isn’t the only one making history. Her friend, Sabrina Carpenter, recently released her new album “Man’s Best Friend”. She announced it back in August and the album cover quickly sparked controversy online. While some fans found it offensive, Sabrina defended it as a metaphor for a young woman’s control over her own body. She even released alternate covers, making a joke of the whole thing. This approach just goes to show how controversy can be a good promotional tool when used in the right way.

Another release we need to talk about isn’t so much an album as it is a single. If you’ve been on social media at all, you probably already know about the Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake beef that went down in 2024. Fans ate it up, with each rapper dropping songs back and forth about each other. The drama behind the promotion of these releases sparked interest, with Kendrick Lamar finally performing his iconic song Not Like Us at the 2025 Superbowl.

On the other hand, some artists prefer to not promote their music before its release. Artists like Beyoncé broke the internet with the release of her self-titled album in 2013 without any PR prep. It sent shockwaves around the world, with people excited to listen to a surprise album. While I think that this method is fun and surprising, it doesn’t always deliver the results that every artist hopes for. The amount of listens artists get can be directly impacted by the promotional content they produce beforehand.

No matter the strategy, promotion is what turns music into a story, turns every release into an event and brings fans along for the ride. It creates a shared experience for listeners alike. I can’t wait to see which album steals the spotlight next!
