Pinterest: A "Pinning" Move for Your Company's Presence

Pinterest, a social bookmarking site, has taken the social media world by storm. Created just two years ago, Pinterest is an invite-only site that allows its users to share images and links of anything from their favorite recipes to infographics. Users add links and images as “pins,” and other users “repin” things they like. The pins can be organized into boards, such as favorite products, clothing, for the home or anything the user would like.

According to its website, Pinterest’s mission is to “connect everyone in the world through ‘things’ they find interesting.” So far Pinterest’s site activity has been impressive. PR Daily reported that Pinterest has set a record for the fastest site to hit 10 million monthly visitors.

Even though Pinterest has record-breaking statistics, many companies have not jumped on the bandwagon. However, companies such as HGTV, which promotes its Pinterest account on television and Twitter, have been successful. As of Jan. 7, 2012, HGTV has 13,186 followers.

On Feb. 2, 2012, HGTV announced, “In addition to our official HGTV design, decor and garden Pinterest boards, we are also introducing several brand new HGTV staff-curated Pinterest accounts, where our fans will be able to get a sense of the personal design aesthetic of some of the creative behind our brand. Whether you choose to follow some or all of our HGTV and HGTV staff-curated Pinterest boards, you’ll discover new inspiration as we pin great new ideas and images every single day.”

In just six short days, HGTV Briana already has 755 followers.

Another company that has started a Pinterest account is Martha Stewart. On Marthastewart.com, visitors are encouraged to not only follow its Pinterest account, Martha Stewart Living, but also to pin their favorite recipes from the site to their personal Pinterest accounts.

Having your company present on Pinterest is beneficial for many reasons. It allows companies to interact with their consumers. Not only can companies promote their own products, but they also have a chance to promote particular lifestyles and interests. Companies can also test new products or ideas with their Pinterest followers before launching.

Along with other social media sites, Pinterest will increase a company’s search engine optimization, by making its content more relevant in Google’s search engine formula.

If your company has not looked in to using Pinterest as a way to target consumers, I suggest you do so. You can click here to request an invitation.
